Minorca

The second largest of the Balearic Island is the boomerang-shaped island Menorca. It has two small towns- Maó and Ciutadella. Menorca was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993 and over 40% of the island now enjoys official protection. Little is known of the island’s prehistory, but the monuments are classified as part of the Talayot culture. Talayots are the rock mounds found all over the island, which people believe functioned as watchtowers. The taulas, huge stones topped with another to form a T around 4m high and unique to Menorca, are even more mysterious. Some of the best-preserved talayot and taula remains on the edge of Maó at the Trepucó site. Besides, you can find navetas, stone-slab constructions shaped like an inverted bread tin.
