Córdoba was the largest city of Roman Spain, and for three centuries it formed the heart of the western Islamic empire, the great medieval caliphate of the Moors. The city’s major monument, the Mezquita, dates back to this era. It is the grandest and most beautiful mosque ever constructed by the Moors in Spain. It stands in the city center, surrounded by the old Jewish and Moorish quarters. It is a building of extraordinary mystical and aesthetic power.
Córdoba is a place of considerable charm. It has grand squares and mansions, calling your attention to the tremendous and often wildly extravagant patios. There is even a “Festival of the Patios” in May. The river, with its great Arab waterwheels and the Roman bridge (Puente Romano), is an attractive area to wander. Places to stay can be found all over Córdoba, but the majority is concentrated in the streets above the Mezquita. Check out our Córdoba hotel offers >>
