Barcelona, the self-confident and progressive capital of Catalunya, vibrates with life. A thriving port and prosperous commercial center. The city hosts many museums, e.g. the Museu d’Art de Catalunya, an outstanding Gothic and modernista architecture, expressed in the work of Antoni Gaudí. From midday to long after midnight the city’s avenues, mainly las Ramblas, are full of visitors. On sunny afternoons, the city’s beaches and promenade are filled with sunbathers, swimmers, cyclists and diners. The city is a pleasure at any time of the year, but to see it at its best, come during one of the main festivals as the Dia de Sant Jordi (April 23).
Despite a population of over three million, Barcelona is a surprisingly easy place to find your way around. The famous Ramblas splits the old town in two: the medieval Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) and the artier neighborhood of El Raval. Much of what you’ll want to see in the city center – Gothic cathedral, Picasso museum, markets, Gaudí buildings, history museums and art galleries – can all be reached on foot in under twenty minutes from Plaça de Catalunya.
